More than a question of appearance

Many people come in because of how their teeth look – and that's a perfectly legitimate reason. But crooked teeth also have functional consequences that become noticeable over the years. Crowded or overlapping teeth are harder to clean; that is exactly where decay and gum inflammation tend to develop.

There's also uneven loading to consider. When the bite doesn't meet evenly, individual teeth carry more load than they're built for. That can lead to wear, cracks and sensitivity, and sometimes tension in the chewing muscles. Correction is therefore often both at once: cosmetic and preventive.

It's rarely too late for treatment, by the way. Teeth can be moved at any age, as long as the gums are healthy and the bone is stable – untreated periodontitis, however, needs to be treated first.

How an aligner treatment works

Clear aligners move the teeth in small steps. Each aligner takes on part of the journey.

  1. Consultation and suitability check. We look at tooth position, bite and gums and clarify whether an aligner treatment will achieve your goal. For pronounced jaw misalignments, combined orthodontic treatment can sometimes make more sense – we say so openly.
  2. Digital impression and planning. With an intraoral scanner we record your teeth without impression material. From this, a three-dimensional model and a simulation of the treatment course are created.
  3. Result preview. Before the first aligner is made, you see on screen how your teeth will move and what the result should look like. Production only starts once you agree.
  4. Wearing the aligners. Each aligner is worn for about one to two weeks, then the next one follows. Wear time is decisive: around 20 to 22 hours a day. They're removed for eating and brushing.
  5. Regular check-ups. At longer intervals we check that the teeth are moving as planned and adjust if needed.
  6. Retainer for stabilisation. After correction, teeth tend to drift back towards their old position. A retainer – a thin wire behind the teeth or a night splint – holds the result. That's not an optional extra, it's a fixed part of the treatment.
The decisive point: aligners only work if they're worn. Regularly leaving them out too long delays treatment or puts the result at risk. That's both an advantage and a disadvantage – it's in your own hands, but you also have to see it through yourself. If you know that's hard for you, fixed braces may serve you better.

Who is Invisalign suitable for?
Invisalign is suitable for teenagers and adults with mild to moderate misalignments. As a certified Invisalign provider in Kiel, we assess in a consultation whether and to what extent your misalignment can be corrected with aligners.
How long does an Invisalign treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the extent of the misalignment. Mild corrections are often complete within three to six months, more complex cases can take a year or longer. We show you a digital 3D plan with the expected result in advance.
Do I have to wear the aligners all the time?
For an optimal result we recommend wearing the aligners at least 22 hours a day. They're simply removed for eating and brushing. This flexibility is one of the major advantages of Invisalign compared with fixed brackets.
Are the aligners really invisible?
Almost. The aligners are transparent and sit thin against the teeth – in everyday conversation hardly anyone notices. They're not completely invisible: on close inspection or in certain light, a slight sheen is visible. In addition, many treatments involve small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to individual teeth so the aligner can grip properly. These are subtle but visible up close. They're removed without residue once treatment is complete.
Do the aligners affect speech?
In the first few days with a new aligner, pronunciation can change slightly – usually with sibilant sounds. This usually settles within a few days as the tongue and mouth get used to it. If you speak a lot for work, fitting a new aligner in the evening means the adjustment period falls overnight.
Does the treatment hurt?
Aligners don't cause pain in the strict sense. In the first day or two after each aligner change, most people feel pressure or tension – that's the sign the teeth are moving. It usually eases quickly. For a very sensitive reaction, a mild painkiller helps; that's rarely necessary though.
Does statutory health insurance cover aligner treatment?
For adults, generally not – orthodontic treatment for adults is not a statutory health insurance benefit in Germany, except for severe jaw misalignments requiring surgery. For children and teenagers, cost coverage follows the orthodontic indication groups; clear aligners often go beyond the reimbursed scope. Some supplementary insurance plans contribute.
