Healthy comes before beautiful

Cosmetic dentistry doesn't start with what's possible, but with what's needed. Before we talk about whitening or veneers, the foundation has to be right: healthy teeth, gums free of inflammation, a stable bite. No matter how well made, a veneer won't work on inflamed gums – and whitening on decayed teeth is not a good idea.

Often the most beautiful effect is closer than you'd think. A professional cleaning removes discolouration and can already make teeth look noticeably fresher. Sometimes it's enough to replace an old, discoloured filling in the front teeth. Only once these simple routes have been exhausted is it worth considering more elaborate procedures.

And one more thing belongs to honest advice: not every wish is dentally sensible. If a treatment would cost more healthy tooth structure than the result justifies, we say so – even when it goes against the request.

The options at a glance

From minimal intervention to a comprehensive change – ordered by how much tooth structure they cost.

Whitening

Lightens the natural tooth colour without removing any structure. The whitening agent penetrates the enamel and breaks down the pigments stored there.

Loss of structure: None.

Bonding

Small chips, gaps or shape corrections can be modelled directly on the tooth with tooth-coloured composite – usually in one session and without grinding.

Loss of structure: Minimal to none.

Veneers

Wafer-thin ceramic shells for the front surface of the front teeth. They correct shape, colour and small positional flaws permanently.

To consider: The tooth is lightly ground down – this cannot be reversed.

All-ceramic crowns

If a tooth is already badly damaged, function and appearance can be restored in one step. More on our Crowns & Bridges page.

Sensible: When structure is already missing anyway.

Aligner correction

If teeth are crooked, position is often the real issue – not colour. Clear aligners correct without sacrificing structure. See Misaligned Teeth.

Advantage: The tooth is fully preserved.

Digital preview

Before larger cosmetic treatments, the planned result can be shown digitally. So you see in advance what you're signing up for – and can voice your wishes before anything is changed.

Advantage: Deciding with a picture instead of a description.
On cost: purely cosmetic treatments are generally not covered by statutory health insurance – that applies to whitening and veneers just as much as to shape corrections made for appearance. You receive a written cost estimate in advance. More on our Costs & Insurance Cover page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does whitening last?
That depends on eating habits and oral hygiene. A professional whitening carried out at our practice in Kiel usually lasts one to three years. With good dental care and regular preventive appointments, the result can last noticeably longer.
Are veneers reversible?
Classic ceramic veneers require minimal removal of the tooth surface and are therefore not fully reversible. There are also so-called no-prep veneers, where hardly any tooth structure is removed. Which option suits you is something we clarify in a detailed consultation in Kiel.
What does professional whitening cost?
Whitening is a cosmetic service and is not covered by statutory health insurance. Costs vary depending on the method (home whitening or power whitening). We're happy to provide a transparent cost estimate before starting treatment in Kiel.
Does whitening damage tooth enamel?
Carried out professionally, whitening does not remove any tooth structure – the whitening agent acts on stored pigments, not on the enamel itself. During and shortly after treatment, teeth often react more sensitively to cold; this usually settles within a few days. A prior examination matters: on leaking fillings, with decay or exposed tooth necks the agent can reach places it shouldn't. We therefore advise against over-the-counter products without a prior check.
Do fillings and crowns get whitened too?
No – and that's an important point when planning. Whitening only affects natural tooth structure. Existing fillings, crowns or veneers keep their colour and can look darker than the surrounding teeth after whitening. If such restorations sit in a visible area, we plan in this order: whiten first, wait for the colour to settle, then adjust the restorations to match the new result.
Do veneers require a lot of grinding?
Considerably less than for a crown, but as a rule something – usually just the outer enamel layer of the front surface is minimally reduced so the veneer doesn't sit proud. What matters: this step cannot be undone. From then on the tooth permanently needs a restoration. That's why we always check beforehand whether your goal could also be reached with bonding or an aligner correction – both preserve more of your own tooth structure.
Does the result look natural?
That depends entirely on the planning. Natural-looking teeth aren't uniformly bright white – they have subtle colour gradients, are slightly more translucent at the biting edges and aren't perfectly symmetrical in shape and length. These small irregularities are exactly what makes the difference between a well-cared-for and an artificial-looking smile. We match shape and colour to your face and age and show you the planned result beforehand.
